A map of Sudan.

Where is Sudan?

Sudan is located in Northeast Africa. It shares borders with seven countries, including Egypt, South Sudan, Chad and Ethiopia.

Its geography is diverse, with arid deserts in the north, to fertile plains along the Nile river. The western part of Sudan features the Marrah Mountains, while the eastern part holds the Red Sea Hills. Most people live along the Nile River, due to its fertile lands.

In 2013 and 2020, ShelterBox responded to flooding in Sudan.

The population in Sudan is diverse. Ethnic groups include Sudanese Arabs, Beja, Nuba, and Fur. Despite the challenges people face, the Sudanese people are known for their resilience and strong sense of community.

What problems are people facing in Sudan?

Sudan is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. The country has been plagued by conflict. There is an ongoing civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Sudan also suffers from extreme weather events. This includes severe flooding during rainy season, which worsens the humanitarian crisis.

People have been displaced, and have had to flee extreme violence with only what they can carry. Many are living out in the open or in makeshift shelters which do not protect people from the weather. People are also facing acute malnutrition, and disease outbreaks.

Sudan is one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries. It regularly suffers from floods, drought and epidemics.

Our response to the crisis in Sudan

We have been working hard to be able to support people internally displaced in Sudan. At the end of 2024, the first convoy of international aid trucks reached Khartoum containing food and health supplies. Intense fighting has meant that aid trucks had not been able to reach Khartoum since April 2023.

We now have supported around 7,500 people in Sudan across 6 locations with essential shelter assistance.

We’re supporting communities in six different camps for people who have been internally displaced. This assistance was distributed by our partners INTERSOS, HOPE Sudan, and the Community-Based Protection Network (CBPN).

Access to Sudan is extremely difficult. It’s hard to move around the country and security is a big challenge. Our partners based in Sudan have spent time in these communities finding out what is needed most. They have been speaking with people affected, community leaders, and the local authorities. The needs are exceptionally high.

How you can help people in Sudan?

The war in Sudan has left 25 million people in need of assistance. We need donations, and support to help the people of Sudan.

We hope to secure general donations so we can reach 20,000 people with shelter and essential items in the coming months.

Zara’s story

With our partner INTERSOS, we have supported tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees in Chad since 2023, with shelter and other essential household items.

Since April 2023, the breakout of conflict between rival armed forces in Sudan has forced millions of people to cross the border into Chad. Zara and her family were among those people. Read her story of courage, when her and her children fled from the conflict.

We fled because of the war. We saw our loved ones killed and we fled to take refuge in Chad.
