Press release – 17 November 2022
A ten-year-old schoolgirl from Lichfield has been getting her bake on to raise money for the disaster relief charity, ShelterBox.
The charity specialises in providing emergency shelter and other essential items to people across the world, supporting people who have lost their homes to disaster or conflict to rebuild and recover.
Ella Chambers was so inspired by the work ShelterBox does around the world, after picking up a leaflet during a visit to her local supermarket, that she got right to work on plans for a charity fundraiser.
Ella says: “When I got home, I read the leaflet and thought it was an amazing charity. Immediately, I decided to do a bake sale.
“I asked my friends if they could help, and they also made some sweet treats. We bought some gluten-free cakes too so there was something for everyone.”
Ella held the bake sale outside her home with the pop-up cake stand proving very popular.
Her proud father, Steve says: “Ella was really inspired by the work that ShelterBox do and wanted to do something to help them. Her friends thought the same and were easily persuaded to help!
“I was really impressed with the teamwork they demonstrated and between them they bake a whole table full of lovely cakes and cookies.”
Ella adds “The bake sale was very successful. Lots of people came and all of our cakes sold-out.
“I donated some money and so did my family. We raised a jaw-dropping £137. I’m so proud of myself and everyone who helped.”
Community Fundraising Assistant for ShelterBox, John Stanbury says: “It’s so lovely that, with the help of her school friends, Ella put on such a wonderful and tasty bake sale.
“It’s no wonder all the cakes got snapped up looking that delicious, and we’re very grateful that the money raised is being donated to ShelterBox to help fund our work around the world.
“Since 2000, we have helped more than two million people across 98 countries and that just wouldn’t be possible without the time and support our fundraisers like Ella give us.”
ShelterBox is currently supporting people affected by devastating monsoon flooding in Pakistan that left more than a third of the country underwater. It’s also continuing to help people impacted by the war in Ukraine. The next phase of its response will be to help people survive bitter winter temperatures, by providing warm clothing, thermal blankets, solar lights, emergency shelter kits, and stoves.
As well as Ukraine and Pakistan, the charity is working to support people in Yemen, Syria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Mozambique.
