Disasters are happening now

People around the world are facing disasters on an unimaginable scale.

Late at night on Friday 8th September Morocco was rocked by a 6.8m earthquake. It struck at 11pm local time under the cover of darkness and most people would have been at home asleep. Nearly 3,000 people have lost their lives, and buildings have been damaged and destroyed. Some of the worst affected areas were in the remote mountains of Morocco. People have been left without food, water and shelter.

In Libya, devastating flooding has affected the north-east coast as a result of Storm Daniel. In the city of Derna the heavy rains caused two dams to burst, unleashing a torrent of water. Whole neighbourhoods have been destroyed, and 20,000 people are feared to have died.

ShelterBox is responding in Morocco, supporting thousands of people left homeless by the earthquake. We’re working hard to get tents, thermal blankets, solar lights, and kitchen sets to communities without adequate shelter in mountain villages.

Many villages have largely been reduced to rubble, leaving people sleeping outside or in communal tents. We’re liaising closely with the government, local authorities, and our Rotary network to support people living in remote areas.

ShelterBox is responding in Libya supporting people whose homes have been severely damaged or washed away by flood waters, in partnership with ACTED. People whose homes have been lost or damaged are sheltering together in school buildings. This is where where we’re going to focus our efforts and we’re looking at what support is needed – it could be blankets, gas stoves, or kitchen sets. A ShelterBox response team is deploying to neighbouring Tunisia this week to meet with our partners to confirm what is needed and what aid we’ll provide together.

Disasters don’t stop. Neither do we. At ShelterBox we are committed to helping people who have lost everything during a disaster. Your support today helps us be there for those displaced by disaster and conflict around the world, wherever the need is greatest.
