Record-breaking adventurer Mike Perham has announced his plan to drive around the world in aid of ShelterBox.
As a warm up for the adventure, which Mike starts on July 3, Mike is embarking on a 1,150 mile tour of the UK raising awareness of ShelterBox during Big ShelterBox Week.
Mike will be starting his UK 'practice tour' from the charity's headquarters in Helston, Cornwall on Monday June 11.
He will drive to Truro, Exeter, Bristol, Worcester, Leamington Spa, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh and down the east coast through Barnsley and Rotherham, finishing at Eton College, Windsor on Friday June 15.
Along the way he'll be visiting school and Scout groups that have supported ShelterBox and awarding them with a special pennant flag for outstanding fundraising achievement.
Mike will spend each night in his Spaceship campervan, provided by a New Zealand-based company who are sponsoring the event.
Mike said: ‘The Spaceship looks like an average family car, but it's the Swiss Army knife of camper vans.’
World drive is the second of three global adventures…
The young explorer from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, will then set off on his around the world journey on Tuesday July 3 from Prime Meridian Walk, London at 11am. His 23,000 mile route will take him from the UK through Europe, Russia, China, Laos, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, through the USA and back onto British soil.
Mike will be travelling alone in a Spaceships Campervan – a specially adapted Toyota Previa – with no support vehicles. He will making special stop-offs at six countries, including Thailand and Christchurch, where ShelterBox has responded in the aftermath of a disaster. He hopes to raise at least £1 for every mile.
He said: ‘Traveling through some of the countries on the route does worry me a little bit, but that's what adventure is all about – there's no determined outcome. You don't always know what's going to happen, but that's what excites me and makes me want to have more adventures.’
Mike made world-wide headlines in 2009 when he became the youngest person to sail around the world, aged 17. On completion of his drive around the world, Mike hopes to fly around the world making him the first person ever to solo circumnavigate the world by land, sea and air.
He explained: ‘My adventure started when I was 14 and I sailed across the Atlantic, then I sailed around the worlds when I was 17. This year I'm driving around the world in aid of ShelterBox and the fantastic work that they do. If I'm successful, I will be the first person to have sailed and driven around the world.’
John Morley, Managing Director of Spaceships, said: ‘Spaceships Campervans are delighted to be supporting Mike on his adventure. Our camper vans are designed to let people get further off the beaten track so this will be a great test of the vehicle.’
Tom Henderson OBE, ShelterBox Founder and CEO, said: ‘Mike Perham is an inspirational young man and we are delighted that he has chosen to support ShelterBox during his upcoming adventure. We wish him the very best of luck and we are happy to support him logistically throughout his challenge.’
World First, the currency exchange specialists, will be handling all of Mike’s currency transfers throughout his adventure. World First Marketing Director Karen Eisen said: ‘We are delighted to be supporting Mike on his epic journey around the globe. He’s going to have enough to worry about travelling from place to place, so it’s great for us to be able to help out by making sure that his money is transferred around the world with the minimum fuss and at the best exchange rates possible.’
